Foreign Languages Tutors
Born to missionary parents, Angela became fluent in Spanish through 12 of years of living and studying in Mexico. When she graduated from high school, she left Mexico to attend Wheaton College, where she earned a B.A. in French and Secondary Education (with a minor in Greek!). Following graduation, Angela married and moved to Vidalia, a small city in South Georgia. She taught French, Spanish, and Freshman English at a private school for one year. Then, due to a lack of local interest in world languages, she taught 5th grade English/language arts for three years in a public school where she rose to the challenge of conquering academic apathy, and by her second year there, all of her students (many of whom had a history of failure) passed the state testing. During that time she was also employed by the district to translate documents, tests, and psychological assessments into Spanish, to act as an interpreter as needed, and to tutor monolingual Spanish children. She is currently working on her Masters in Spanish and TESOL (Teaching English to Student s of Other Languages) and teaching Spanish through an online charter school. When not teaching or studying, Angela loves to run with her dog, read books, and make culinary creations.
“Angela showed Jeremiah that teachers care for students… She is truly a great teacher and is giving children a brighter future.” – Jamie O. (mother of Jeremiah)
“(Angela) has been so kind and understanding. Her class was one of my favorites, and I hate to lose such a wonderful and fun-loving teacher!” – Moriah D. (student)
Alex is a native German social worker/pedagogue who worked in the German school system for two years prior to coming to the US. He loves the German language and delights in teaching it to others. Alex is a huge Mac fan and taught/tutored countless individuals as a Mac expert for many years. He is convinced that anyone can master the German language and that it can be fun at the same time. If you don’t believe it, give it a shot!
“(Alex)’s native interest in language has led to a mastery of both German and English. His intrinsic interest and proficiency is bound to be contagious for anyone interested in learning German.” – Jason Lang, History & Latin High School Teacher
David’s undergraduate major, Classics, was settled as soon as he set foot on WashU’s campus: his love of languages had been a large part of his life as early as kindergarten, since which time he’s studied Japanese, Spanish, Latin, Hebrew, and Greek. Rivaling his love of languages is his love of classic rock, especially the anthems of the 1970s and 1980s, a love that is expressed through one of his many hobbies: playing guitar. His true passion, however, is teaching, and he plans to make a career of teaching at the high school level; he is currently pursuing a Master’s in Teaching from Washington University, his undergraduate alma mater. He has gained valuable experience serving as the Pledge Educator for his fraternity, giving private lessons in Latin, student-teaching IB-Level Latin at the top-ranked public school in Missouri, and working with an ACT/SAT prep company, teaching in both classroom and private one-on-one settings. David is also a sports fan, especially fond of the Texas Longhorns’ football team. HOOK ‘EM!
“During David’s time as an instructor in my region, he continually impressed me with his commitment to improving as both a teacher and tutor. He was willing to take on an any assignment, no matter how challenging it appeared, and in each situation he rose to the occasion.” – Adam B., Supervisor (Revolution Prep Houston-area Manager of Instruction)
“Thanks for the opportunity to say thank you for helping Caroline….The class that Caroline attended was necessary for to manage test anxiety and low performance. She took each week seriously and did all her homework.…You were able to share strategies for each section and how to write her essay with proper language. You can’t get all that out of just a study book. I appreciate you encouraging and being patient during the tutoring sessions as the ACT was a huge mountain for her to climb.” – Cara G., happy parent.
