Language Arts Tutors

Phil

Phil has taught composition, literature and business writing at the college level, while working on graduate study at the University of South Dakota and the University of Kentucky. He also worked as a tutor and proofreader through college. He loves the rewards of teaching one-on-one: getting to know students, tailoring an individual approach to his student’s studies, and watching them succeed. When he is not studying, Phil enjoys time with his wife and daughter, cooking all sorts of food (especially Southern and French), and discussing his favorite music and movies.

“Phil handed me tools that would allow me to find a space within my writing to unleash creativity and voice while executing correct style and proper grammar. His course is one of my most memorable and enjoyable of my four years at Kentucky.” –Miles M.

“Phil’s class was so comfortable, and he was so easy to talk to, that it led to me being more emotionally involved in my writing and producing stronger works.”  –Cyrus S.

Kelley

After earning a degree in English from Auburn University, Kelley spent two years in China teaching college students.  While living in China, Kelley split her time between helping advanced English majors sharpen their writing skills and trying as many exotic foods as possible (stewed pig snout, anyone?).  Kelley also earned a Master of Arts in Teaching during her Asian adventure, and was honored to be mentored by Tang Meixu, a Chinese professor, poet, and kung fu master. Upon returning to the United States, Kelley took on her biggest challenge yet: having three kids in three years!  For stress relief during these years, Kelley worked privately with students, developing and implementing home school curriculum.  She also helped struggling students learn to write college-caliber compositions.  Kelley also freelances as an editor and writer and eagerly awaits the release of her first book series, Great Biographies for Kids, this fall.  Often, Kelley is accused of blurring the line between witty and goofy.

“Kelley taught me how to communicate clearly and cohesively.  During my freshman year of college, my professors were highly impressed by my writing skills.  Kelley has gone beyond the average teacher’s investment in her students and has fully prepared me to write for life.” —Katie M.

“After I started working with Kelley, I remember telling my mom that I liked learning for the first time in my life.” —Mallory J.

“After seven years of tutoring by multiple educators, we finally found a tutor who truly loves learning and imparts that love to her students.  Through Kelley’s tutoring, Drew went from a hesitant reader to a child who loves literature.  Drew, age 13, says, ‘Ms. Kelley gave me a feeling of hope after just a few weeks of tutoring. My grades improved a lot and she didn’t just feel like my tutor but also my friend.’” —Sandi P., parent of Drew
